Abstract

An educational board game aimed at reflection on censorship

in the world

Data Rights is a project that was developed during the "Communicating Complexity" course at university. It is an educational game designed to encourage critical reflection on the topic of censorship and its impact on freedom in certain areas, using simple forms and clear, easy-to-understand language.

The game's central element is the Data Rights cards, which provide context for the theme through case situations and player identification. The challenge cards are used to spark debate among players by presenting censorship case studies for each category, while the unexpected cards immerse players in the game by presenting case studies and headline news, and interactions with the game.

The game's central element is the Data Rights cards, which provide context for the theme through case situations and player identification. The challenge cards are used to spark debate among players by presenting censorship case studies for each category, while the unexpected cards immerse players in the game by presenting case studies and headline news, and interactions with the game.

The game is played on a board, with players moving through it to reach the end. The colours of the categories on the board correspond to the shapes on the playing cards. At the start of the game, a cube is rolled to determine which square the players will move to. When a player reaches a square, they draw a challenge card of the corresponding colour, which presents an argument for the player to debate using their cards. After a debate between the players, the winner is decided by comparing the data and supporting evidence on the cards. The player who wins the challenge gets the square, and the game continues.
